A lot of people consider Yosemite National Park their favorite. Granted to describe the sight of Yosemite Valley upon exiting the last of the Highway 41 tunnels as breathtaking is unoriginal but it definitely is an accurate way of putting it. The combination of the waterfalls along with the Half Dome protuberance and the walled valley solid gray rocks make for an awesome shot regardless of your photography skill level.
With so many visitors trooping to Yosemite it is virtually impossible to see everything on the valley park and most people only see five percent of the place. Still people are more inclined to withstand the crowds in Yosemite because of its almost vertical nature than they are in parks like Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon. All eyes are pulled to the sight above. Summer is not the best time to visit as crowds are larger.
Nothing much about the Great Smoky Mountains national park has people enamoured with the place. The park has lots of trails you need to walk personally to genuinely get a feel of the area. The park easily clears 9.2 million visitors per year while the Grand Canyon does not even come close to this figure. But for a certified Westerner the views along with the crowded paths made for a less than interesting trip. Tourist magnets including casinos are found in abundance within towns like Gatlinburg and Cherokee. There has not been a lot of improvement seen in the area of air quality for a long time. With countless National Park tourists coming in droves it has perhaps been depleted too much.
Wrangell Saint Elias is another national park most people wish to see. The Gates of the Arctic and the Kobuk Valley belong to the Alaska parklands totaling 55 million acres. But I’ve never gone southeast of Anchorage to the place the park service calls The Mountain Kingdom of North America. It has more glaciers and mountains over 16,000 feet than anywhere in the country.
The Grand Canyon has a North Rim national park most people would love to go back to. It is believed that the dad of one child disliked the South Rim crowds so much that they took the long route to the Grand Canyon North Rim. Savoring the beauty of the canyon views proves a bit difficult when you are busy bumping into other tourists every few minutes and you suddenly find yourself yearning to be alone for a while.
There is a variety of wildlife in the Everglades from Yellowstone buffalo to Kobuk Valley grizzly bears. A bunch of alligators usually sun themselves on mudflats covering the Anhinga Trail of Everglades which is also a fun to watch. It is a scary experience to watch them yawning exposing pointy teeth and then slipping into the murky waters leaving just their eyes visible unsubmerged.
Some people considered Monument Valley as one of the national parks. The West is well represented in its monoliths in the shade of red. The background for many films, the area straddling Utah and Arizona is part of the Navajo Indian reservation. But the self governed status of the place prevents it from becoming a true national park. If it were, it would have been one of my favorites.
With regard to Hot Springs counting it with the rest of the national parks has received much argument. There is a place called Bathhouse Row giving people rubdown routines the old fashioned way in the Arkansas spa town. National park status cannot be awarded to it but converting it into a historic national location will work. Since 1832 it was designated as federal territory which was some four decades before Yellowstone and got grandfathered the same time the National Park Service was formed in 1916. In joining the club coming out is close to impossible.
Tourists at the Glacier Waterton International Peace Park can look forward to two incredible treats.
The entire region constitutes one international peace park place. Old style British teatime is observed at the Tudor Prince of Wales Hotel simulation venue which is another reason to visit the Canadian side.
